After a relaxing Christmas at home Glenn and I traveled down to Switzerland from Dec 26-30th to do some exploring. We intended to start in Interlaken and then head to Zermatt, Lugano, and Zurich but the trip didn’t quite go as planned. We got into Interlaken on Friday afternoon and by Saturday morning there was already quite a bit of snow. After skiing on Saturday and attempting to drive to Zermatt we realized there was no way we were going to be able to make it there safely, by that time there was a good 1-2 feet of snow. We ended up turning around about 15 minutes outside of Interlaken to head back for the night. We tried again on Sunday to drive to Lugano but the roads continued to be pretty bad and not safe for driving. Interlaken is great for skiing since it’s surrounded by mountains, but not so great for trying to drive out of in a blizzard. At that point we cancelled the rest of our trip and found a hotel in Interlaken to stay in until Tuesday when we planned to return home. The good news was we loved Interlaken and had a great time there, hopefully we can make it back to the other cities at some point! If you ever find yourself in Interlaken we found a great hostel where we stayed the first 2 nights called Balmers Herberge. The prices were pretty good, they included breakfast, and the staff was excellent – they even helped us call the other hotels to cancel rooms. The last 2 nights we decided we were tired of sharing a dorm room and we stayed at Hotel Aarburg.
Pictures of the ski slopes (we did a combo of beginner and intermediate runs, my skills are getting better but still not great):
Here are some pictures of snowy Interlaken:
And something we found, we didn’t try it but both wondered what it might taste like:
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
